The After School Club in June and July 2026, is exploring what we can learn from the life and teaching of Jesus through a resource called Jesus out of the Box! There will be practical, hands on activities to help children understand the stories better and loads of interesting objects to explore!
Who can come?
Open to all KS2 children living in or at primary school in Downend, Bristol, we will meet once a week for six weeks on Monday after school. You do not have to be a Christian to come but you do need to be curious!
What will we do?
Tuck in to a drink and a biscuit on arrival to chill out after school!
Then, we will unpack one box a week. Over the six week period, the children will build their understanding of who Jesus is, some of the things he did between his birth and death and how his actions and teachings revealed who he is, according to the Christian faith. It is best if your child attends all six of the sessions so that they do not miss out on some stories. However, if you miss one, each week stands by itself so do not worry!
The stories provide a creative, spiritual development opportunity for children of all faiths and none as they are invited to make their own meaning from them and apply it to their lives. Jesus out of the Box encourages good mental health and wellbeing through activities which promote stillness, mindfulness, reflection and autonomy. Children can consider how to express their own beliefs and ideas and explore how Jesus might inspire people to live.
At the end of this six week club, the children will bring home a box of their personal reflections to share with parents and family at home.
The dates will be:
Monday June 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th and July 6th and 13th.
Time of each meeting: 3.30 pm – 4.30 pm
Where: At Christ Church Downend church, in the garden room. Please come to the side door at church where a member of the team will greet you.

Who is Leading the Club?
Julie Gardner (Primary Schools’ Chaplain in Downend) and Harriet Jolly (Children’s Lead at Christ Church Downend) will be leading the club. Some other members of the schools’ chaplaincy team may also attend. All members of the schools’ chaplaincy team have been safely recruited, have enhanced DBS checks and have undergone safeguarding training via the Church of England. Many of us have a background in schools, health and education as well as the church.
Parking
The church has a few spaces available in the shared parking area near the Christ Church Downend Medical Centre off North Street. Please walk into the church grounds from there and make your way to the side door.
