A message from Paul Peterson, our Associate Minister:

Dear Christ Church family,

At a time of ongoing uncertainty the Church Wardens and I just wanted to update you on how we are responding to the coronavirus threat at Christ Church and reassure you that we are closely monitoring the unfolding situation and advice from the government and the Church of England.

At this stage there are no plans to cancel any regular activities or services, but we are making adjustments to how we administer communion in line with the most recent advice we have received.

‘It is our view, in light of the continued increase of Covid-19 cases in the United Kingdom, that it is now necessary to suspend the administration of the chalice as well as physical contact during the sharing of the peace, blessing or “laying on of hands”.’ Archbishops of Canterbury and York 10/3/20

  • In communion services in the weeks ahead we will therefore offer only the consecrated bread to all communicants, with the priest alone taking the wine;
  • We will say the words of the Peace in response form only, rather than mingling and shaking hands etc.
  • Any prayers of blessing or prayer ministry offered will not involve any form of physical contact – eg laying on of hands.
  • In addition, those serving the bread/wafers will wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water and use hand sanitiser before touching the bread.  

We have a particular responsibility towards one another at a time like this and would ask you to ensure that you follow the NHS advice on preventative measures. If you feel at all unwell, please self-isolate and seek advice via the NHS 111 line.

With the elderly and those with existing health conditions most at risk, we also want to ensure we provide appropriate practical support. If you do have to self-isolate but need someone to do some shopping for you, please contact Maggie Nichols who will coordinate a response on 07790 250853.

This is an unsettling time for many, with implications for our economic and social life but let’s help each other to look to the God of peace who is our ultimate protector and strength.
